Artist: Pia Mia
Producer: Tara Razavi
Title: Mr President
Date Release: May 19, 2014
For my first case study I looked at the song 'Mr President' by Pia Mia. Pia Mia is a young 19 year-old female artist. A lot of her songs are based on hip-hop, and RnB which mainly fits with her type of age group.
Synopsize of the music video:
Her music video for Mr President is mainly performance base but it also has conceptional themes as well. This video is just about the artist Pia Mia singing about a guy that she wants. The music video has some sorts of links with the lyrics. There is a part when she sings 'I need a solider' she and the dancers stands with their right hand on their head to show the stand of a solider.
Camera angles/ special effects/ mis en scene and editing techniques:
The artist is the main subject as she is singing to the audience about her and the guy she can't let go of. In the beginning of the video it starts of with a close up shot of a no signalled television and it zooms out into a mid shot of the artist as we are introduced to her sitting on a couch. It goes into a lot of close shots of the artist and long shots to show where the music video is set which is set in a street wise area with cars and dancers which are shown with long shots.
The mis-en-sense of this music video is different, it starts of in a room which is dark, there are graffiti on the walls behind where the main artist is sitting. It has a couch with broken televisions around it, this does show a urban type of look as Pia Mia is young. Another mis-en-scene is that she is in a street type set, there are cars in the background with other actors, there is also male dancers with the artist dancing whilst she does lip sync. These types of sets does give an view to what the song is trying to give across to the audience which I could guess it is a love song but a very urban way, with dancers and street look.
The editing of this video was kept very straight forward and simple. It just goes straight into the next scene, there are hardly any fading or cross in and out. However, at the beginning of the music video there are a few fades as the beat and tempo at the beginning is quite slow. The fact that they have done this is because the tempo and beat is quite fast so they kept it simple. This song doesn't really have a meaning or symbolic side to it, it is just about her wanting a guy. The video has been made fast for the rhythm and tempo of the beat especially near the end of the song when the beat gets fasted the editing is kept quick and simple.
Representations of stars/ artistes included authorage, role of performance and lip syncing:
Lip syncing was used in this music video as the artist was in the video so she was the main subject and therefore she had to lip sync the song throughout the video. The artist is represented in a young out going and fun person as she is dancing and enjoying herself. However, she wants the man she is singing about. When the artist lip syncs 'doctor, I need a medicine' it is showing suggesting that the man she's talking about is her medicine and that she needs him.
Themes and motifs:
The theme is kept very lively and exiting. It is a very dancy song and has a tempo beat. The lyrics seems a bit different to the way the artist has put across the music video.
Target audience:
The target audience for the song is mainly teenagers, Pia Mia as I have stated before is a 19 year-old young female and the song is mainly RnB and hip-hop so it is for people who enjoy to listen to these genres.
Idea's I could use:
I believe that I could use some ideas from this music video as I am thinking of basing my music genre on a hip-hop type song, some type of dance song. I would like to use dancers like she has used because I thought that this was effective and linked with the genre of the music. I also liked how the artist was the main performer in the music video and there were a lot of shots which showed this. The fact that the tempo and beat was quite fast and it was still a type of love song the music video was kept was quite and simple I believe that this would be a good way to put the video across, it links with the tempo and beat.
Sila this is rather brief and presented as one long paragraph. Add visuals - still images and paragraphs, headings even. Also add detail to your analysis: what about mise-en-scene elements? Proof read work to, it feels rushed.
