2. Research/ case studies two

Artist: Ed Sheeran
Producer: Jeff Bhasker and

  • Emile Haynie

  • Title: Photograph
    Date release: 11 May, 2015

    Synopsize of the video:
It is a narrative music video as Ed Sheeran is singing about his past life from a baby to where he is now. The music has videos of the artist Ed Sheeran from when he was a baby to a toddler, growing up and showing his life growing into the music as we could see that he played musical instruments such as piano, guitars, etc...

    Themes and motifs:
The theme of the song is linked very much to the song as it is talking abouts photos and the past. He is showing a good colourful side to how he became an artist by showing what he went though to get to his position he is in right now.

Representations of Stars/ artistes include authorage, role of performance and lip Synching:
Ed Sheeran is presented in a strong, independent young man throughout the whole music video. The song is called photograph it links with the music video as it is a sort of photograph of his entire life in one music video. There is no lip syncing as it is just old videos. The music video is mainly about him but it is talking about his loved ones mainly for his mother.

    Analysis:
This song also was released before mothers day, this itself has a meaning as he is showing his love for his family and how "love" from your family could mend your pain. At one part of the lyrics "loving can hurt" we would automatically think a a partner relationship but if we look at it from the music videos perspective it is singing about the mothers pain to raise a child. Ed Sheeran also says "and I won't ever let you go..." ing he would never leave his love of his parents. This video has a really loving symbol showing his love to his family through showing videos of him growing up to be a big artist.

Camera angles/ special effects/ mise en scene and editing techniques
The camera angles are based on the videos which were taken in the previous video tapes. The video starts of with a long shot of a baby in a bed sleeping. There are shots like long shots to show the mise-en-scene which are a different variety of places such as the house setting, the beach, park, and concert. There are shots which show every moment of the artist Ed Sheeran growing up, to him crawling, walking, and playing piano.

The editing is very clear as you could see the different videos together. There are no lip syncing as the artist is not singing the song in the video. The target audience is for teenagers to around adults as they could link their life story to the artists and have a motivation to do better in their lives. I like the idea that the artist uses old videos of himself, this has a good image to the audience and helps motivates them.

    Target audience:
The target audience for this song would be mainly for teenagers, I believe this because this could give them motivation to do their best to become something good in the future and not to give up on their dreams. This could also be for people who go through tough times and need motivation.

    Ideas I could use:
I like the fact that he uses the past in this music video so it is not just him doing a performance base it is more of a narrative video, so in our music video we could use the past instead of just the present.

    1. We do see adult Ed here!, there is a strong concept to this video. You have explained it fairly well, again more visual, more detail, paragraphs/headings.
